Forestry in Brazil

Brazil is the location par excellence for investments in timber and forestry - either for reflorestation projects (with eucalyptus, pinus, or even native hardwood trees) or for sustainable forest management according to the rules of the FSC.

For reflorestation, the supply of cheap land in combination with year-round growth and abundant water makes forestry in Brazil more profitable than in many other markets.

For sustainable management - including C02/carbon credit projects - the enormous native forests in the Amazon states are an obvious choice. Forest here is still quite cheap - from $100 to 300 per hectare; and the government actively supports sustainable forestry projects which allows investors to make both good returns and a contribuation to CO2 reduction - further benefiting from carbon credits along with the Cap-and-trade program.

Buying forest land in Brazil - especially in the Amazon - requires a highly specialised approach; as many pieces of land simply do not have good title and frauds are frequent and hard to avoid with a normal "paper" due diligence.

Our clients include European and US funds, as well as a number of well-established Brazilian reflorestation and forest management companies that have gone through the learning curve and allow us to find land or partners with the right credentials.

Forestry, as an investment, has less volatility than other agricultural investments. Obviously, it is less affected by short-term weather variations or diseases. Furthermore, prices of the end product tend to be more stable than most commodities and offer an excellent inflation protection.

Has sustainable forestry and CO2 projects; as well as reflorestation of degraded areas.

Currently raising $135 million from institutional investors.

Turnkey - reflorestation

Project of about 10000ha, fully managed by leading Brazilian forestry / carbon credit consultants.

This fully developed project can be purchased as a "turnkey" project, or can be expanded with an extra 10 areas totalling 135000 hectares with full and clear title.

US Forestry group

US forestry group seeks to buy forest for sustainable forestry under FSC rules - 300000 to 500000 ha.

Will also consider JV, providing capital as well as forestry/CO2 know-how; and reflorestation projects.

Amazon - sustainable forestry

Brazilian group with around 400000 hectares of Amazon forest seeks investors for sustainable reflorestation and Carbon Credit programs.

This is a company that provides consultancy for CO2 projects but also has hands-on experience.

They offer pre-packaged solutions from 50000 to 3000000 RCE.

They also consider selling part of their properties - managed by them or not - which range from approx. 30000 ha to 200000 ha and are fully documented and referenced.

Amazon - Timber deeds

Investment product entitling investors to share the profits of sustainable forestry, in blocks of 1000 ha. per title.

Investment $1 million per title.

European timber fund

European timber fund, developing eucalyptus reflorestation projects from greenfields, securing future income with LT contracts with paper mills.

Mainly family offices and institutional investors.

Has so far invested over $40 million.
